The heart of the renovation is the infill of a 21-story, east-facing light well that gave the original floor plate an awkward U-shape.
Now this Class A office space competes with newly constructed highrises. For several years, the 38-story tower would hold the title of tallest west of the Mississippi River, and dominate the Seattle skyline.
#Smith tower upgrade#
Mithun brought the 42-story landmark into the 21st century through the design of new office space, lobbies and storefronts, together with upgrade of seismic, structural, electrical, mechanical and communications systems throughout the office tower. On July 4, 1914, firearm and typewriter magnate Lyman Cornelius Smith opened the 484-foot-tall (148 m) Smith Tower, the city's new tallest building. Smith mass-produced automobile frames, turning out 100 million by 1982. Housed on a sprawling multi-acre, multi-block site on the city’s North Side, A.O.
